Man, 19, dies after moped collision on Kamehameha Highway in Kaaawa
A 19-year-old man has died from injuries he suffered in a Sunday afternoon collision involving a moped and an SUV in the Kaaawa area.
Police said the man operating a Honda moped was traveling southbound on Kamehameha Highway and lost control of his moped for unknown reasons, flipped over the handlebars, and landed in the northbound lane. The moped ended in front of the path of a Kia MPVH operated by a 61-year-old man. This happened at about 1:58 p.m., police said.
Police said the moped driver was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later died. Police said it is unknown if he was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The Kia driver and two passengers, a 60-year-old woman in the front seat and a 12-year-old boy in the rear seat, were not injured.
Police said speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision.
This marked the 21st traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 20 at the same time last year.
