Some of the fiercest fighting in North China has been for the control of the Nankou or South Pass, the narrow mountain gorge which gives entrance to China from Mongolia, beyond which lies Soviet Russia. Through this pass came Genghiz Khan, centuries ago, to make his conquest of the celestial kingdom. Japanese infantry racing to the summit to occupy one of the numerous hills around the pass, on Sept. 7, 1937.

Inactive for 10 years, Mayon volcano in Alday province near the city of Legaspi, some 200 miles Southeast of Manila, erupted on Sept. 7, 1943. Ashes from the eruptions settled over parts of four provinces and thousands of persons living near the base of the mountain were forced to flee.
