‘American Idol’ to hold online auditions for Hawaii hopefuls

The search for the next “American Idol” reaches Hawaii with virtual auditions available on Saturday.

Prospective contestants can visit americanidol.com/auditions now to sign up for an audition time on Saturday, when they can perform for producers of the show via Zoom and get their feedback. Contestants can also submit recorded auditions via the website.

The reality TV singing contest, now broadcast on ABC, is entering its 20th season. Season 19 winner Chayce Beckham and Philip Murphy, a fan favorite from that season, will be join the local hopefuls in a virtual waiting room, answering questions and offering audition tips.

Hawaii has had a number of singers do well on the show. Jordan Segundo was a Season 2 finalist, and in Season 3 Jasmine Trias and Camile Velasco reached the top 10. Siblings Liahona and Ammon Olayan, who were originally from Wahiawa and lived on the Big Island and the mainland, competed on Season 19, with Liahona reaching the top 24.

Those planning to audition live should prepare two or three songs, either a cappella or self-accompanied by, for example, guitar or piano. Auditioners must have been born between June 2, 1992, and Sept. 15, 2006. Those under age 18 must have permission from a parent or guardian, who must be available during the audition.

Auditioners can use their cellphones or tablets to audition, but must download the Zoom app at zoom.us to do so. The Zoom app is not needed for auditions on a laptop or desktop computer.
