One of the biggest head-scratchers in the 2020 Census data is Hawaii’s ranking among only five other states where all counties reported an increase in housing units since 2010. The islands joined Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island in that. And here we thought Hawaii was lagging others in this area.
Oh, wait: That’s a low bar for Hawaii, which, like Rhode Island, only has five counties. Of course, a housing shortage has been this state’s baseline since, well, it seems like forever.
Don’t touch rail’s third rail
There’s a reason why untouchable subjects for discussion are called “the third rail.” That expression comes from the actual third rail to be found on electrified transit tracks, which, as four youths learned last week, are things to avoid.
The group was caught on closed-circuit cameras jumping the Halawa station fence and approaching the plainly marked rail. One of the added risks: Few Hawaii teens have any familiarity with trains, and likely never realized any part of this one was working.
