The Honolulu Police Department has released extended, although heavily censored, body-worn camera footage from officers
involved in the April 14 shooting of 29-year-old Lindani Myeni, including footage presumably from the officer who shot Myeni three times.
Just days after Myeni, originally from South Africa, was shot and killed, HPD released about two minutes’ worth of footage from two officers who were at the scene, and on Friday it released that footage again but as part of three videos that together are more than
54 minutes long.
Not much new information is revealed in the videos, which contain mostly the aftermath of the shooting and is often censored.
Large portions of the released footage contain video that is blurred or audio that is muted or censored with beeping sounds. It’s not clear why some portions are censored, although some of the blurred portions appear to be images of Myeni after he was shot. The muted and censored portions are presumably of officers talking with each other, as dialogue is otherwise sparse in the edited video.
HPD made the videos available to the media but did not describe what they were about and did not respond to any of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s questions about them.
Prior to Friday the body-worn camera footage of patrol officer Brent Sylvester was not made available to the public. A 16-1/2-minute video that was released Friday was presumably from Sylvester and was also heavily censored. It featured the officer walking around the scene after Myeni’s shooting.
Honolulu Prosecuting
Attorney Steve Alm announced in June that no criminal charges would be filed against the officers involved in the shooting after saying their use of deadly force was justified.
Myeni’s family has filed
a civil lawsuit against HPD.
