Off the News: A shot gets you a shot at a prize

Sure, some who got their shots long ago may be miffed that only the newly vaccinated will be eligible for prizes under the latest Vax Da Max campaign (higotvaccinated.com/vaxdamax). But given the delta-variant surge, most of them likely are happy to yield their chance if that could jump-start vaccinations statewide and curb community spread.

As for the big San Francisco trip that goes to the one getting the 10,000th shot: Let’s hope people don’t hang back, trying to get their timing just right.

Surging house prices on Kauai

The combination of housing demand exceeding supply and an influx of people moving here from the mainland — often seeking to improve their conditions for working from home as COVID-19 concerns persist — is continuing to spur record-busting house prices.

Among neighbor islands, Kauai is surging. The median price for a single-family home there rose to a new high of $1.3 million in July, and marked the seventh straight month in which the median was at least $1 million. While Oahu’s inventory is larger, it, too, appears poised to hit that mark. The Honolulu Board of Realtors reported last week that single-family houses sold for a record median $992,500 in July.
