Maui man dies in rollover crash on Piilani Highway
One man is dead after a single-vehicle crash Saturday night along Piilani Highway on Maui.
Maui Police Department Sgt. Nicholas Krau said in a news release that around 10:42 p.m. Saturday, the lone male occupant and operator of a 2003 Toyota Corolla sedan was traveling westbound on Piilani about 9.3 miles east of Kula Highway mile marker 22 in Kahikinui when he lost control of his vehicle.
After crossing into the opposite lanes of traffic, the man left the paved portion of the highway and continued driving onto the unpaved shoulder along the makai side of the roadway before the Corolla rolled over and crashed.
First responders found the sedan on its roof, with the male driver partially ejected from the vehicle. It was determined the man had suffered fatal injuries during the crash and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Krau said MPD investigators determined the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol and speed are suspected to be factors in this incident; investigators are still working to determine if drugs were involved.
