A U.S. Labor Department report found that May inflation in Honolulu was 3.8% — lower than the month’s national rate of 5%, which represented the highest year-over-year gain in more than a dozen years. The national rate bumped up again in June, but this bout of inflation will likely be temporary, according to the Fed, as pandemic-related supply chain snarls are resolved.
Still, when the economy fully reopens, Honolulu prices for everything, from the monthly groceries to a gallon of gas, will likely continue to hold as among the steepest nationwide. High cost of living has long been locked into the price tag for a home in this far-flung place.
