Hiker airlifted from Maunawili Falls Trail after falling, injuring his head

A 19-year-old man on the Maunawili Falls Trail was airlifted from the hike today after falling about 20 feet and injuring his head and neck.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a call about an injured hiker at 6:35 p.m. today. The 19-year-old, who was hiking with another person, reportedly “fell and injured his head near the end of the trail and became dizzy.”

The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reported that the hiker fell “roughly 20 feet and suffered serious injuries” to his neck and head and had multiple abrasions.

HFD arrived at the scene at 6:48 p.m. and established a landing zone at Maunawili Neighborhood Park.

HFD personnel and rescue specialists walked the trail and made contact with the hikers at 6:59 p.m., and the patient was airlifted to the landing zone.

EMS then transferred the patient, who is in serious condition, to a trauma hospital.
