No injuries reported after 2 outrigger canoes flip 1 1/2 miles off Oahu
Honolulu Ocean Safety, the Honolulu Fire Department and the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Unit worked together to rescue 12 paddlers from waters off Sand Island today.
The paddlers required assistance after two outrigger canoes overturned about one and a half miles from shore just before 10:30 a.m. this morning.
At 10:28 a.m., 911 dispatchers alerted HFD about possible boaters in distress. Four units with approximately 12 HFD personnel responded, along with lifeguards on jet skis and state firefighters aboard ARFF watercraft.
In total, two boats, a helicopter and three jet skis arrived on the scene starting at 10:37 a.m. to locate and assist the paddlers.
Lifeguards stablized the canoes and, with help from HFD, ARFF and other paddlers nearby, began to transport the 12 people and both canoes back to shore at the Sand Island Recreational Area.
No injuries were reported.
