The Hokule‘a and Hikianalia voyaging canoes arrived at Lalo, French Frigate Shoals, at around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, departing Mokumanamana at around 6 p.m. Monday.
While at Lalo the crew is partnering with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to do an underwater survey of the area to assess damage to the atoll and coral reef from Category 3 Hurricane Walaka, which hit in 2018.
Five young navigators are training on this voyage.
The canoes are on the “Navigating the Kupuna
Islands” voyage, the second training sail in preparation for the May 2022 Moananuiakea Voyage, a 41,000-mile, 42-month sail around the
Pacific which will cover
46 countries and archipe-
lagos, almost 100 Indigenous territories and 345 ports.
