Maui man charged with attempted murder, arson after setting fire to van with woman inside

Maui prosecutors have charged a 39-year-old man accused of setting a van on fire while a woman was sleeping inside in Kihei.

Shiane Marumoto was charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree arson. His bail is set at $1 million.

Maui police said the woman was sleeping in her van on South Kihei Road near a recreation center at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when she woke up to intense heat and saw flames.

She safely exited the van and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded and extinguished the flames.

Police arrested Marumoto in the area.

The victim told police that he threatened to kill her a few months ago.
