Maui’s Shane Victorino on Baseball Hall of Fame ballot

Hawaii-born and two-time World Series champion Shane Victorino met with the press after a luncheon held by the Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii.
Maui’s Shane Victorino is among 11 first-time candidates on the 2021 ballot for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, it was announced today.
There are 14 holdovers also on the ballot including Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling.
Election to Cooperstown requires being named on 75% of the ballots in voting by the Baseball Writers of Association of America.
Victorino, who was a multi-sport star at St. Anthony School in Wailuku, was a sixth-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft.
A switch-hitter, he averaged .275 over 12 seasons and was a four-time Gold Glove winner and twice chosen for MLB All-Star Game. Three times he received votes for Most Valuable Player awards.
He played for five teams — the Phillies, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Padres — before retiring in 2015.
Victorino gained tremendous popularity in Philadelphia as a mainstay of the Phillies’ run of success in the mid-2000s, which included five division titles, two National League pennants and the 2008 World Series Championship.
He was also a sparkplug in Boston’s remarkable 2013 World Series title and is well-remembered there for the grand slam that helped the Red Sox win Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, propelling them to the World Series.
