Great Aloha Run goes virtual for 2021 race

Registration is now open for the 37th annual Great Aloha Run, which will be held in February.

The annual event, a fundraiser for Carole Kai Charities Inc., announced today that it would be held virtually for the first time in its nearly 40-year history to protect the health and safety of the runners and the community.

In addition, participants will have a span of eight days to complete the 8.15-mile foot race any time between Feb. 8 and Feb. 15, 2021, at any location they choose. The in-person race, which attracts thousands, traditionally starts in front of Aloha Tower and ends at Aloha Stadium.

“Despite these challenging times, the Great Aloha Run is committed to the health and well-being of the people of Hawaii and there’s no doubt that our Hawaii charities need our support now more than ever,” founder Carole Kai Onouye said in a news release. “While the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to pivot and find a way to still have the race in 2021, our commitment to giving back to the community remains strong and is what drives us. Giving participants a week to finish the race is something we’ve never done before, but we are excited to make this change to offer an opportunity to the many racers who always look forward to this annual event in February.”

Organizers still plan to offer events and activities for Great Aloha Run weekend, Feb. 12 to 15, including music, health tips, professional and school challenges and other prizes.

Hawaii Pacific Health is the title sponsor of the event for the fourth year.

Last year’s Great Aloha Run generated $170,000, organizers said, benefiting more than 100 charitable organizations and the military. Since its inception 37 years ago, the Great Aloha Run has raised more than $14 million for over 150 Hawaii nonprofit and community groups.

Participants who register by Dec. 31 are eligible to receive an early entry discount rate. All participants will receive an official 2021 finishers’ T-shirt, medal and sponsor gifts. Register for the race online at greataloharun.com.
