Mother Nature did on Sunday morning what Fresno State could not do all Saturday afternoon: cool down the University of Hawaii football team.
Following Saturday’s 34-19 road victory over the Bulldogs, the Rainbow Warriors traveled to Denver, where they will train in advance of Friday’s nationally televised game against Wyoming in Laramie. The Warriors’ plans for stretching and light exercises at a Denver-area field on Sunday were altered because of heavy snowfall. The Warriors ended up doing those exercises in the hotel.
With today’s forecast calling for more of the same, the Warriors will be practicing in chilly conditions. With the Wyoming game moved up a day, the Warriors’ usual “Tuesday practice” in full pads will be conducted today.
Then again, the Warriors proved to be adaptable, as evidenced in their season opener. When Fresno State dropped six defenders into coverage, the Warriors attacked the five-man front with an eclectic running game. Chevan Cordeiro rushed for 133 yards (116 net yards rushing) on nine non-sack scrambles and keepers. Calvin Turner, aligned as a running back, slot and wildcat quarterback, rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Turner gained first downs on six of his 10 touches. Miles Reed ran for 109 yards.
“Obviously, we feel we can throw the football,” Graham said. “We know we can do that. But we also want to have balance.”
On defense, the Warriors produced four takeaways — three interceptions and a fumble — and held the Bulldogs to 27 yards per drive.
Graham acknowledged the Warriors are still constructing their offense and defense. Although the Warriors averaged a play every 23 seconds, he believes the tempo can be quicker. The Warriors introduced some new looks, opening the game with Reed and running back Dae Dae Hunter in the backfield. Derek Thomas has made an easy adjustment from rush end to fullback/H-back.
The Warriors also showed their depth. Michael Eletise started at left guard in place of Kohl Levao, who suffered an ailment last week. Levao is expected to play against Wyoming. Because the Warriors opened with a three-man front on defense, they went with heavier ends. Justus Tavai started ahead of Penei Pavihi. There was flexibility in the secondary when hybrids Quentin Frazier, a transfer from Azusa Pacific, and Khoury Bethley retreated into coverage.
The new rules enabled the Warriors to expand the travel roster from 66 players to 74. The Warriors used 51 players against Fresno State.
