The billionaire owner of Lanai and a business partner announced changes to their indoor farm venture on the island Thursday, including a new leader and severance from resort operations.
Larry Ellison and partner David Agus said the fledgling hydroponic greenhouse operation initially known as Sensei Farms has been re-branded as Sensei Ag.
The company’s initial farm on Lanai, which began commercial sales earlier this year, also has been separated from a wellness resort brand now known as Sensei and formerly known as Sensei Retreats, which includes Sensei Lanai operated by hotel management firm Four Seasons in Koele adjacent to Lanai City.
Previously, the farm and the resort operation were part of Sensei Holdings Inc.
As part of the change,
Sonia Lo was named CEO of Sensei Ag.
Lo has more than 30 years of experience in finance and “controlled environment” agriculture. Most recently, she was CEO of California-based indoor farm operator Crop
One Holdings.
Crop One claims to have been in continuous commercial production longer than any other vertical farm in North America, and supplies about 30 grocery stores through its FreshBox Farms brand. The company also partnered with Emirates Flight Catering in 2018 to build the world’s largest vertical farm in Dubai for an estimated $40 million.
The 130,000-square-foot Dubai farm aims to produce 6,000 pounds of leafy greens a day.
On Lanai, Sensei Ag began producing vegetables earlier this year in the first two of six planned 20,000-square-foot greenhouses.
The operation is currently supplying hotels, retailers and chefs on Lanai.
At full build-out, the operation aims to produce over a million pounds of food annually for distribution beyond Lanai using 90% less water than traditional farming and yielding fresher and more nutritious food that costs less than imports,
according to the company.
Sensei Ag also has a goal to replicate its greenhouse model on the mainland and internationally.
In a statement, Lo said it’s an aspiration and an honor to join Sensei Ag and work with visionary founders.
“We are incredibly well positioned with Larry and David’s guidance, knowledge and networks to become the leader in our space,” she said. “There has never been a better time to rebuild our global food and agriculture supply chains.”
Ellison, co-founder of tech firm Oracle Corp., and Agus, a doctor and renowned
cancer specialist, publicly announced their plans for Sensei in 2017.
Ellison is ranked by Forbes as the fifth-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $73 billion. He bought 98% of Lanai in 2012.
