Charla Baker, 11, charmed the judges with a rendition of the “stork,” one of six required tricks competitiors performed at the state finals of the National Hula Hoop contest at the Kalakaua Recreational Center. The new Outrigger Hotel is adding to Waikiki’s traffic problems and has caused complaints to be lodged with the Honolulu Police Department and City Hall. The 550-room hotel, one of the largest in Waikiki, has a small unloading area relative to its capacity. Outrigger Manager Howard Donnelly said, “We recognize it is a problem, but we feel it will become less of one as people get accustomed to it.”STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / JUNE 6, 1969
Patricia Lieberman teaches, takes care of two children, maintains a home in Wahiawa and gets no help from her husband because he’s in Vietnam, but still she was able to earn her college diploma. Lieberman will graduate Sunday from the University of Hawaii. The main operating room on the second floor of the new Kauikeolani children’s hospital is inspected by Andrew V. Temporal, surgical orderly; Eva Louise Barrette, surgery supervisor; and Irene Ruth Snyder and Wanda Alves, surgery nurses. The room is air-conditioned and walls are of Carrara glass. The stainless- steel instrument cabinet in the corner was designed and fabricated locally. Opening ceremonies for the hospital are scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Pastor William M. Han Jr. saw the new prayer tower at his Apostolic Faith Church, 1043 Middle St., in a vision. It is now a reality, and parishioners gather daily to maintain a chain of prayer high above the clamor of the city. The $560,000 tower and building complex was constructed entirely through contributions, tithes, free-will offerings and memorial donations.
