People still made their visits to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on Sunday to pay their respects to those interred there even though the annual Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony for Monday was canceled. In past years, Boy Scouts decorated every grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific with flags and flower lei on the Sunday before the ceremony.

Joe Mayer and his wife, Kathy, pay their respects at a row of seven gravemarkers that he decorated with an American Flag. One of the markers belonged to Sgt. Joseph T.H. "Frenchy" LeBlanc, a friend of Joe's father, Staff Sgt. Joseph P. Mayer, Sr. LeBlanc was a crewman aboard a B-29 bomber from the 502nd Bomb Group that was hit by enemy fire and went down in Japan on July 25, 1945, killing seven on board.
