VIDEO: Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell joins the COVID-19 Care Conversation

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell joined the COVID-19 Care Conversation to take viewer questions about the City’s response to the coronavirus.

Sporting a Sig Zane fabric face mask, the mayor reiterated the need for all residents to wear a face mask in public to help reduce the spread of the virus. Caldwell said Honolulu police will continue their enforcement of the stay-at-home order, reminding residents that violations can lead to a $5,000 fine and/or up to one year in jail.

Caldwell said he is encouraged by the compliance of many people who are following the order to stay home, but indicated that completely lifting the order on April 30th is unlikely. He says a decision on whether to extend it will be made by the middle of this month.

Caldwell also addressed a recent report that he and his cabinet would be receiving a 3% pay increase. He says this is inaccurate and that he will not accept an increase, even if one is offered. Furthermore, he has instructed his cabinet not to accept any increases as well, and says he will put this commitment in writing to the salary commission.

The mayor also took questions on the construction project at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park, and said that all construction is on hold at Sherwood Forest, after iwi was discovered there earlier this week.
