Martin Joslin, 6, who has been flying half his life, tests the throttle of an Aeronca Chief before taking off with his father, Tech. Sgt. Francis Joslin of the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station. Martin’s dad flies as his co-pilot, but he says he only operates the rudder pedals that his son’s legs can’t reach. Joslin himself soloed at age 7 but was later grounded when the Civil Aeronautics Administration was formed.

The new Kailua Drive-In Theatre sign is now in place overlooking Pali Highway, with the theater scheduled to open in April. The theater’s owners originally planned a 500-square-foot sign, but it was reduced to 300 square feet after the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle urged the City Council to pass an ordinance limiting the size of signs for drive-in theaters.

These “lady sailors” have arrived in Hawaii to join 72 sister WAVES for shore duty here. The group is the first group of WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, to be assigned to peacetime duty with Pacific Fleet shore-based commands. Heading for the 49th State Fairgrounds at Sand Island a bit early, suitcase and all, are trained chimpanzees Neil and Emil. They are part of a three-ring animal circus opening at the fair. The Honolulu Junior Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of the fair, has put circus tickets on sale downtown at the Trans-Pacific Airlines office at King and Bethel Streets.

STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / JULY 1, 1968

The talented family singing group the Osmond Brothers and versatile pianist Peter Nero arrived from Portland, Ore. They, along with a 38-piece orchestra, will perform July 3 and 4 at the Honolulu International Center arena as part of the Andy Williams holiday show starring the the vocalist himself. The two concerts will be first appearances on the island for the three star attractions.
