Navy and Hawaiian groups host Makahiki festival

Mamo Wassman attended the Makahiki at Puuloa with fellow wahine from Na Wahine Hui O Kamehameha on Saturday. The event was organized by the Oahu Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs with the U. S. Navy military to provide an opportunity for military families to learn about pre-western Hawaiian traditions and to forge relations between the two communities. US Navy Rear Admiral Robert B. Chadwick, II and Xavier Conrad were paired in the final round of the haka moa (one-legged wrestling) during the Makahiki at Puuloa on Saturday. The admiral was defeated by Conrad but was the champion in the in the moa pahe'e (dart tossing) event.
