Preseason No. 1 Hawaii has added the second player from Greece in as many men’s volleyball seasons, announcing the signing of Spyros Chakas from Athens on Friday.
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter is one of four signees for the 2021 season. Freshman Dimitrios Mouchlias, a 6-6 middle on the current Rainbow Warrior roster, is from Soufli, Greece.
Chakas chose Hawaii over Long Beach State and Pepperdine. Last season he helped his team to the Greek U-18 championship, earning most valuable player and best spike honors.
Hawaii’s other signees, announced last month, are freshmen Austin Buchanan, a 6-8 setter from Moscow, Idaho; Hawaii Baptist Academy’s Makua Marumoto, a 6-4 hitter; and 6-3 setter Jack Walmer from Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Hawaii, which finished second nationally last May, opens the season with Charleston on Jan. 3 and 4 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
