Woman, 69, dies in head-on crash in Kahuku

A 69-year-old woman died today after her vehicle was hit head-on in a two-vehicle crash in Kahuku.

Police said the crash occurred about 9:05 a.m. near Turtle Bay Resort.

A 20-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet flatbed truck southbound on Kamehameha Highway when he veered into the oncoming lane and struck an oncoming Nissan vehicle, police said.

The truck driver and his passenger, an 18-year-old man, were both taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The woman, who was alone in the Nissan, was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where she died.

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions for about three hours to investigate the crash.

This was the 49th traffic fatality this year compared to 60 at this time last year.
