Japanese tourist run over in Moanalua Gardens purse snatching
Honolulu police are asking for the public’s help in locating two suspects wanted in connection with a purse snatching that ended with a tourist getting run over by a pickup.
About 12:10 p.m. Thursday, a Japanese tourist was walking in the parking lot of Moanalua Gardens when a male suspect ran up from behind and grabbed the woman’s purse off her shoulder, police said.
The suspect ran to a waiting pickup and got into the front seat.
The victim, a 49-year-old woman, chased after the suspect and was run over by the pickup as the driver sped away without slowing, police said. The rear passenger tire drove over the lower half of the victim’s body, and she was taken to a hospital with injuries to her lower extremities.
Police described the suspect as between the ages of 28 to 35, about 140 to 180 pounds, with a medium build, and black short hair to his ears. He was wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and dark pants. The driver was possibly female, police said.
The getaway truck was described as a dark gray, 4-door Toyota Tacoma pickup with roof racks, black wheels, and a dangling left side mirror.
