Rainbow Wahine basketball team upsets Texas
The Hawaii women’s basketball team closed strong to defeat Texas 73-60 on the final day of the Heineken Rainbow Wahine Showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center today.
Forward Amy Atwell poured in 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting — including 6-for-7 on 3-pointers, tying a program record for long-range makes — and wing Jadynn Alexander scored a career-high 17 as the Rainbow Wahine (4-4) outscored the Longhorns (4-4) 28-12 in the fourth quarter.

It was the program’s first win over a team from the Power Five conferences since a 65-60 win at Arizona on Dec. 17, 2017.

Texas was ranked No. 22 in the preseason Associated Press poll, but had since dropped out of the rankings.
Still, UH entered as an underdog coming off losses in the first two days of the tournament. But the Wahine turned to their 3-point shooting to take an early lead and stick around in the second quarter. They shot 10-for-19 (52.6%) from long range.
Guard Julissa Tago added 13 points and point guard Nae Nae Calhoun supplied 11 points and eight assists.
