Attention, luxury shoppers and architecture enthusiasts: Louis Vuitton reopens its Hawaii flagship store in Waikiki on Friday in the historic Gump’s building, 2200 Kalakaua Ave. Designed by architect Hart Wood in 1928 and long the site of a Waikiki Gump’s department store, the building blends elements of East and West, with an overhanging tile roof and “moon” door influenced by Asian architecture. Louis Vuitton acquired the building in 1991 and has operated at the location since 1992.
The interior and facade have been redesigned, with a modernized staircase that seems to float over a blue-glass covered section of the ground floor.
Local artists’ work has been incorporated, with a commissioned sculpture by Kaili Chun, “Nana i ke Kumu” (“Look to the Source”), and an art wall by Hawaii artist Brandy Serikaku depicting island flora.
Offerings include leather goods, accessories, shoes, ready-to-wear, fragrances, watches and jewelry, and Objets Nomades — selections from a collection of furniture and objects created in collaboration between Louis Vuitton and international designers.
Exclusive items include leather Trunk Clutch and Mini Boite Chapeau bags in a deep purple hue, inspired by the color of the Gump’s building’s tiled rooftop. The Gump’s location will also be the only place to see pieces from an upcoming “Idylle Blossom” collection of jewelry in advance of a worldwide launch in January.
Store hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily; 971-6880.
