To rank the top 20 cities, Insurify said its researchers compiled data on congestion using TomTom’s 2018 Traffic Index Ranking. TomTom is a consumer electronics company focusing on navigation technology. Average commute times were from 2017 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Researchers also pulled information on the percentage of drivers in each city with a prior accident as well as the proportion of drivers with a prior incident from Insurify’s database of over 1.6 million car insurance applications.
Nationally, Insurify found that on average, 22.2% of all drivers have at least one prior driving incident, while 12.4% of motorists have a prior car accident. The average commuting time, according to the Census Bureau, is 26.9 minutes.
