Ward Village developer Howard Hughes Corp. said extensive renovations to Kewalo Harbor that
began in 2017 are expected to be completed by the end of this month.
The Texas-based company has invested more than $20 million to modernize and increase safety at the deteriorating port and harbor facilities as part of its public-private partnership with Hawaii to operate and manage the harbor.
Hughes Corp.’s improvements and infrastructure repairs include new concrete piers, additional boat slips, a loading dock, lockboxes and fenders. The company also installed a new wastewater station, sewage pump, fish haul and weigh-in terminal, along with a dual 10,000-gallon fueling depot with diesel and ethanol-free gasoline. Upgraded electrical and water lines, fire safety and security enhancements, landscaping, signage and free Wi-Fi also are expected to better support the
harbor community.
“Before this renovation, concrete was crumbling into the
harbor and we had condemned piers,” Kewalo Harbormaster John Eveleth said in a statement. “The Howard Hughes Corporation’s investment went above and beyond our expectations. Today, the harbor is safe and local businesses are thriving. We expect continued growth as more members of the community discover this improved facility.”
Kewalo Harbor is home to nearly 100 small businesses including commercial, recreational and charter operations.
“We saw an opportunity to enhance an underutilized public asset in need of massive repair,” said Todd Apo, senior vice president of community development for Howard Hughes. “We are thrilled to see this historic harbor thrive today as a first-class, full-service marine facility and community amenity.”
