MAKAPUU SUNSET BENEFIT HIKE RETURNS
You and your keiki — whether the two- or four-legged kind — are welcome to an early evening walk at Hawaiian Humane Society’s Makapuu Sunset Benefit Hike, Saturday at Makapuu Lighthouse Trail.
“Families are encouraged to participate because this is a great opportunity for people and pets to get some exercise, while also spending time together and enjoying the outdoors,” said Kelsey Tanouye, the society’s communications and community events coordinator.
The hike is a kickoff fundraiser for the society’s Oct. 13 PetBlock Paina event, so all funds raised will go back to helping Oahu’s animals, Tanouye said.
Aside from contributing to a good cause, participants — from beginners to experienced hikers — will be able to take in beautiful scenery along the 2-mile trail.
“This hike features stunning views … spanning Hawaii Kai to Waimanalo that hikers get to enjoy as the make their way up and down the trail,” Tanouye said.

FLIGHT SIMULATORS DEBUT AT AVIATION MUSEUM
Aspiring pilots of all ages can brave a dogfight in a 1940s warbird over Pacific waters or a futuristic spaceship combat scenario in outer space at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum’s two new Fighter Ace 360 Flight Simulators, unveiled earlier this month.
“From grandparents to children, our newest attraction brings families together to share an exhilarating encounter with aviation that entertains as well as educates,” said museum executive director Elissa Lines.
The two-passenger flight simulators are capable of 360-degree motion — meaning they can roll, somersault, spin and loop — and are the first of their kind in Hawaii. (Guests should not ride if they have a health condition that will expose them to risk in a high-movement environment.)
Visitors to the museum can choose from two distinct experiences: Thunder in the Pacific or Quantum Star Fight.

LEARN ABOUT TARO AT KENNEDY THEATRE
Families can celebrate the life cycle of the taro plant in an interactive and immersive show, “Keiki Kalo,” running Sept. 21 to Dec. 7 at Kennedy Theatre’s Earle Ernst Lab Theatre.
Geared toward infants, toddlers and pre-school children up to age 4, “Keiki Kalo” is a 35-minute production that explores the themes of community, culture and the relationship people have with the earth through the taro plant.
The show is co-coordinated by Melisa Orozco Vargas, a graduate student in the Theatre for Young Audiences program, and program director Mark Branner.
“ ‘Keiki Kalo’ allows families to experience the show together in ways that traditional performances for young children do not,” Branner said.
Audience members, including parents and grandparents, won’t just sit and watch the action, they will participate in it, Branner said, digging in the soil, planting huli (kalo stems) and going to the lo‘i — without getting submerged in mud.
“In addition, the performance surrounds the audience so that everyone is fully engaged in the wonders of kalo and the planting, growing, harvesting process,” he said.
