The issue of the Thirty Meter Telescope is in many ways heartbreaking. I try to understand and appreciate both points of view.
The advancement of science improves the quality of our lives.
The protection of the aina is life- giving.
The maintenance of cultural tradition is important to our richness and diversity as a people.
Spiritual practice and belief is important to the maintenance of our humanity as a peaceful people.
Born and raised in Hawaii, I have lived in Hawaii all 79 years of my life. I love my Hawaii and its culture. I am grateful to our host culture and have much respect and admiration.
In my heart this does not feel like a one-issue problem. As a human race, it is important for all of us to demonstrate in our everyday life a willingness to respect and protect what collectively benefits all of us.
Please come together in a spirit of collaboration and cooperation. And most of all, respect ourselves and each other.
