Mayor Kirk Caldwell now tells us that we must act immediately and commit to the Ala Wai Flood Control project or we will lose federal funding (“Honolulu City Council is pressured to support Ala Wai flood project,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 20). Sound familiar?
That is exactly what his mentor Mufi Hannemann told us about rail. It is also exactly what Caldwell told us as managing director.
Now, the people of Hawaii are paying more than the amount we were going to “save” by using federal dollars because of poor management, not to mention the shame of an FBI investigation. The public has not heard from companies that do flood control projects that are environmentally sound.
We ask the City Council members to consult with different engineering companies that have done projects like this all over the world. Reporters from the Star-Advertiser would do us a great good by reporting on other solutions. Water flow should not be the only consideration. Water quality must be considered.
