It’s so easy for former Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa to talk because he’s not in office and no longer under public scrutiny (“Hawaii leaders needed to be more decisive in enforcing law on Mauna Kea, former Maui mayor says,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 19). But what he seems to fail to understand is that the Hawaiians are subjected to laws and regulations that were forced upon them.
The Hawaiians’ lands were taken illegally by the white man. If Hawaiians fighting to get their land back and be in control of their own destiny is wrong in his eyes, then obviously he exists with closed eyes and ears.
The Hawaiians were wronged for more than 100 years. It’s about time the United States government and the state of Hawaii come to the table with good intentions and right the wrong.
Make it pono.
