KEIKI CONCH SHELL BLOWING CONTEST RETURNS
Keiki can learn the art and tradition of blowing a pū (conch shell), then compete for a chance to win great prizes, at Pū Ha‘aheo, the third annual Keiki Conch Shell Blowing Contest at Pearlridge Center.
The two-part event begins Sept. 7 with a conch shell blowing workshop and informational seminar. All contestants must register for and attend one of two workshops, plus provide their own conch shell to participate in the competition. (A limited number of conch shells may be available if needed.) The Keiki Conch Shell Blowing Contest is Sept. 14.
“It’s a great way to get the kids involved in Hawaiian culture,” said Blaine Kamalani Kia, the contest’s cultural and protocol advisor.
The experience allows children an opportunity to find growth and confidence, and to perpetuate a Hawaiian tradition they can be proud of, Kia said.
The contest is part of the larger Keiki Ho‘olaule‘a, the longest-running Aloha Festivals ‘Ohana Event held each year at Pearlridge Center. In addition to the contest, the hoolaulea will include musical groups and hālau hula, arts and crafts stations, and demonstrations.
Contest winners from two age categories will receive the grand prize of a conch shell (sponsored by Kia Enterprises and Island Events & Promotions), blow the pū in the upcoming Aloha Festivals Floral Parade and participate in other special appearances.

EAT2EXPLORE PROVIDES A TASTE OF INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
The summer travel season may be over, but families can still explore other countries — from their own kitchens and through their tummies —with eat2explore, a new kids cooking kit that helps families spend quality time cooking and dining together all while learning about a new cuisine and culture.
Each “explorer box” focuses on a different country, such as Greece, Italy and Mexico. Inside each box is three easy-to-follow recipes, essential spice/sauce mixes and a shopping list for fresh ingredients.
Recommended for ages 5 and older, the eat2explore kit also includes an educational country brochure and activity sheet, collectible cooking tool, flag pin, country sticker and passport — items to encourage teaching moments while preparing and enjoying each meal with the kids.
The “Explore Japan” box, for example, includes “crunchy nori sesame” for the salmon teriyaki recipe, “ketchy tonkatsu sauce” for the chicken/pork katsu recipe and kid-friendly chopsticks.
