It is stretch of logic to call the addition of the 14th telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea a desecration. It is a marginal expansion of the existing situation.
The kiai and their supporters who are protesting the creation of the Thirty Meter Telescope cite the damage the Hawaiian people and culture have experienced from 200 years of Western contact. They have placed themselves in a position to remedy some of the injustices that concern them.
In negotiating an end to their blockade, the “protectors” of the mountain could obtain many benefits for those whose ancestors settled these islands. If they succeed in blocking the construction of the TMT they will “win.” And nothing will change.
Are the kiai leaders who aim to rectify some of the injuries of the past? Or are they career protesters who would rather have a grievance than a solution?
