Any more headlines about the burglar-arsonist — he has been setting fires as a diversion so he can steal from hotel rooms — is not going to help burnish Hawaii’s somewhat tarnished image as a carefree vacation spot, that’s for sure.
What’s even worse than the bruise to the isle reputation is that these were high-rise hotels in crowded Waikiki, and someone very well could be hurt or killed in such stunts.
The three-day spree started on Sunday with fire alarms going off on separate floors at the Alohilani Hotel. Then on Monday, a fire was lit at the Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger. Guests evacuated, and two rooms were found to be burglarized.
Finally on Tuesday, another fire was set intentionally at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Grand Waikikian Tower.
There are images of a “person of interest” captured in surveillance video taken at all three locations, so that is a hopeful edge for Honolulu police.
CrimeStoppers has put out a call for information, asking for the public’s help in identifying this man. He is seen carrying backpacks similar to those stolen.
The public can see the images at honolulucrimestoppers.org (click the Cases menu near the top and then Unsolved Crimes). Submit an anonymous tip there, by calling 955-8300 or through the P3 Tips App.
One more headline would be welcome: “Hotel Arsonist-Burglar Caught.” Let’s hope he is, before tragedy strikes.
