A 19-year-old woman accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend’s dog is charged with felony animal cruelty.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday charging Liciela Agpalza-Butolph with first-degree cruelty to animals. It accuses Agpalza-
Butolph of killing or attempting to kill a pet animal belonging to Alric Ladao without first obtaining legal authority or Ladao’s consent. The charge is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Circuit Judge Shirley Kawamura set bail for
Agpalza-Butolph at $20,000. She also approved an order prohibiting Agpalza-Butolph from having contact with Ladao.
Deputy Prosecutor Lee Ying Kwok told Kawamura that Ladao was outside his apartment June 20 when he heard his dog Roxanne crying. When Ladao looked inside, Kwok said, he saw Agpalza-Butolph holding down Roxanne and stabbing the pit bull-terrier mix with a knife.
According to Kwok, Ladao, 41, said he tried to stop
Agpalza-Butolph but was
too late. Kwok said that after Agpalza-Butolph stopped stabbing the dog, she said, “She’s gone now.”
Honolulu police arrested Agpalza-Butolph 25 minutes later for animal cruelty but released her the following day pending investigation. Kwok said Agpalza-Butolph had been living with Ladao
in his Wahiawa apartment at the time of the stabbing.
Hawaiian Humane Society Chief Veterinarian Dr. Kasey Carter performed a necropsy and determined that Roxanne died from 11 stab wounds and the resulting blood loss.
