STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / JUNE 12, 1963

This stagecoach, complete with shotgun guard and marshal, headed for Saddle City in Waimanalo from the waterfront. Pedestrians gawked and motorists stared as driver Gary McDonald, guard Lucky White and marshal Del Fortney maneuvered through traffic. Saddle City opened its Frontier Town two days later.

These five women may not be as spry as they used to be, but they still have plenty of get-up-and-go, which they attribute to love of children. They were pioneers in the Hawaii Foster Grandparents Program in 1965 and worked with children at the Waimano Training School and Hospital in Pearl City where some didn’t think they would last more than a couple of days.

Stepping into the inner room of China Sea Tattoo Co. on Smith Street is like walking into a sterile medical office where proprietor Mike Malone believes in cleanliness. Tattoo needles are encased in germ-free bags, next to sterilizing alcohol and gauze pads. These are part of the tools Malone used to put a samurai tattoo on Gary Massey’s back, which took over a 3-month period.

Ever wonder what a hippie is like? According to these Honolulu Advertiser Progress Edition special correspondents who are Kamiloiki Elementary School students, a hippie drives a ’62 Dodge and didn’t like cauliflower as a kid. The “hippie” being interviewed is Jim Rhodes, an arts and crafts instructor at The Foundry, explaining the art of glassblowing.

Sparky, pictured with fireman Anthony J. Lemmo at Hickam Air Force Base’s central fire station, hardly has time for his regular job as firehouse mascot with all his engagements. He was guest of honor at Hickam’s annual dog show while also helping celebrate National Kids’ Day on base, and next week he will lead the observance of National Fire Prevention Week.
