When I read that the city’s Department of Planning and Permitting had included Kuilima Estates in its ban of vacation rentals, I was appalled for a number of reasons (“Crackdown could hurt tourism,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 1).
The area should have been designated a “resort area,” as are Ko Olina and Waikiki. For years the condos have been the favorite vacation destination for both mainlanders and kamaaina. Since first staying at the Hyatt Kuilima in 1981, my family vacationed at the condos over a dozen times.
Kuilima offers the only resort area on the North Shore and we found it quiet and certainly “Old Hawaii,” and we recommended the area to relatives and friends. Perhaps it was an oversight by the DPP when it included Kuilima in the ban. In any case it should be rectified.
