The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is broken. Only one trustee, Keli‘i Akina, is standing up for the many Hawaiian supporters of the TMT (“Meeting of the minds,” Star-Advertiser, July 27).
The TMT is a distraction to deflect that OHA is sitting on more than $642 million. Larry Ellison bought the whole island of Lanai for $300 million. This could have been a great opportunity to create an island legacy for Native Hawaiians. Where was OHA?
Meanwhile protesters are fighting over a telescope and are distracted from more important issues like Hawaiians dying while on the wait list for Hawaiian Home Lands.
I have been told they have separate missions, but do they?
