The Thirty Meter Telescope situation is looking more and more like the Superferry fiasco, in which the tyranny of the few thwarted the wishes of the majority.
The polls have shown that more than 70% of the local population, including Native Hawaiians, support the project. The observatories have been on the mountain for decades and, until now, hardly a peep out of anyone. The hypocrisy and selfishness of the protesters is staggering.
The TMT project is not just a wonderful opportunity for the state, University of Hawaii and Hawaii island. The knowledge that will be gained through the telescope will benefit the entire world.
Let’s not let these people stop a great project.
