Thousands of photographs of hula girls at the Kodak Hula Show have been taken over the years, but pictures taken as the show celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Waikiki Shell are extra special. The show started in 1937 with five dancers and four musicians and now features about 20 singers and 17 dancers.

A new type of garbage truck being sold in Honolulu is demonstrated. Harry Ing, office manager of the City Welding Co. Ltd., agents for the Heil Co. Colecto-Pak machine, watches as the lift carries garbage to the top of the truck. It is automatically packed inside.

Ronald Wong shows off a 70-pound watermelon grown by his father, Gee Chong Wong, on their Waimanalo farm to enter in the 14th Windward Fair. The elder Wong chose one vine and allowed only two fruit to develop on it to bring about the massive melon, and said he likes his prospects for top honors with the white-seeded Watson variety fruit. He’s already looking ahead to the next crop, with the ambition of nurturing a 100-pounder.

These jubilant Honolulu bridge players tied for first place in the team-of-four bridge championships at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel. They are Wilfred Motokane, left, Francis Wong, Warren Ishii and Walter Kau. The team session was the final event in the five-day Hawaii regional bridge tournament.

Janet Bernard enters her new executive suite office in the Blaisdell Hotel, which is undergoing renovations. The ground-floor lobby is slated for refurbishing, and its marble floor will be restored. The building exterior also will get a fresh coat of paint to highlight its architectural details.
