Filming for the second
season of CBS’ “Magnum P.I.” on Oahu has begun.
A reboot of the show, which originally ran from 1980-1988 and starred actor Tom Selleck, ran for 20 episodes in its first season, which began in 2018. “Magnum P.I.” was renewed for a second season in January.
The production team kicked off work Monday with a blessing from Kahu Kordell Kekoa, who called the main cast and crew to one of the set’s stages in Kapolei.
To the dozens who were present, he said, “We’re going to bring Season 2 to life, but it’s going to take every one of us
to bring it to life.”
After the blessing, Peter
Lenkov, the show’s executive producer, spoke to the cast and crew. “So, I was thinking about what to say for the start of Season 2, and I wrote this whole speech down, this great speech, but you know what? I thought I’d save it for Season 3,” Lenkov said.
Immediately afterward the cast headed off to rehearsal while the rest of the team continued to construct sets for upcoming scenes. Kekoa held another blessing shortly after the first for an under-construction set that appeared to be a tropical-themed bar.
An important member of the cast, Stephen Hill, who plays Theodore “T.C.” Calvin, isn’t sure what the season is going to bring.
“I kind of find out the same time as you guys find out, to be honest with you,” he said, although he did make some predictions about his character.
“I think you’ll see a little bit more of my character,” Hill said. “T.C. runs a successful business — he is the most successful helicopter pilot on the island. … If you watch the show, you’ll see me make money on my business but also save lives in the interim.”
Calvin is a Marine veteran who fought alongside the show’s titular character
and operates his own helicopter tour company on
the show.
The finale of Season 1 ended with the death of the main character and investigator Thomas Magnum’s
former significant other, Hannah, making for a tidy ending that left all but one major question unanswered.
Magnum had asked another main character, Juliet Higgins, to become partners and start their own private investigative firm at the start of the finale, but she never answered.
Lenkov is also one of the executive producers for another Hawaii-based reboot, “Hawaii Five-0,” which premiered in 2010. Also airing on CBS, “Five-0” was recently renewed for a 10th season.
Episodes of “Magnum P.I.” will air Friday nights, moving from its Monday night slots for Season 1. “Five-0” will air Friday nights as well.
There will also be a possible crossover between the two shows.
The season premieres
of “Magnum P.I.” and
“Hawaii Five-0” will air Friday, Sept. 27.
