When it comes to purchasing a house in paradise, standard supply-and-demand concepts are sometimes suspended. In June, according to the Honolulu Board of Realtors, Oahu’s single-family home inventory increased by nearly 17 percent compared to June 2018’s tally, but sales dropped by nearly 9 percent. And the median price tag for last month’s sales was $800,000 — a jump from last June’s $782,388.
For the past two decades, monthly median sales priced have climbed, with occasional dips. Back in 1999, the year’s median sale price was $290,000; in 2009, $575,000; and last year, $790,000, according to Board of Realtors data.
Hilo gets four-legged weed whackers
The Hilo Soccer Fields will benefit from new landscapers that do the job without a lunch break — well, the job itself supplies the food — and they even are able to manufacture fertilizer in the bargain.
They are goats that will whack weeds more thoroughly than the motorized gear, or at least that’s the hope.
This pilot project by Hawaii County’s Parks and Recreation should be watched by the state Department of Education. If schools can’t use Roundup any more, perhaps goat grazing would do the trick.
