The new crosswalk law, effective for one week now, bars people darting across a crosswalk once the lighted signal starts flashing the countdown. It’s going to be one that’s tough to enforce. Advocates can only hope many people will self-police.
But many people have noticed that the countdown starts almost immediately, and counts down the time until the light changes, usually longer than needed to cross. Many signal timers need adjusting, and pedestrians are counting on officials to do it.
Floatilla sinks, thankfully
Much to the relief of government officials and others discouraging underage drinking and other illegal and irresponsible behavior in the ocean, the July Fourth “Floatilla” failed to take shape in waters off Waikiki. Good.
It’s unclear whether the credit goes to a choppy high-surf forecast, increased enforcement or, perhaps, proper respect for the ocean. Two years ago hundreds of participants — bobbing in plastic floaties and on stand-up paddleboards and other vessels — required assistance getting to shore. Here’s hoping that social media-propelled spectacle is now a thing of the past.
