The City Council should not waste time passing laws that the responsible police official said would rarely if ever be enforced (“Crosswalk law cracks down on late starters,” Star-Advertiser, July 1).
The law says it is a violation to enter the crosswalk after the seconds start counting down. This will have zero effect on cutting down on pedestrian traffic accidents. It is irrelevant when you start across. The important thing is if you are still in the crosswalk when the light turns red.
I can cross three times as fast as many old people. As long as you make it across before cross traffic starts, you should not be cited. Pedestrian traffic accidents will not be lessened by this law. They are caused by the increasingly common practice of motor vehicles running red lights. Concentrate on ticketing them.
