Victor Borge gets an all-clear signal from the weatherman for his concerts at the Waikiki Shell following his arrival from Seattle. Borge, who will be at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, is assisted by state greeter Carolyn Ching. The pianist-humorist begins a world tour following his Honolulu appearances.

Hanalei Plantation, a new luxury resort on the grounds of the Berkmyre Estate, where much of the movie “South Pacific” was filmed, will include 50 guesthouses in its first increment. The hotel, 26 miles from Lihue Airport, is unique in setting, architectural design and decor. Each of the luxuriously furnished guesthouses has a view of a storybook valley and the Hanalei River, as well as the Kauai mountains and the Pacific Ocean on either side of Hanalei Heights.

Helen Kanakaole is a cleaning woman at Kaiulani Elementary School. She works all day, then comes home and gives nightly hula lessons for free to anybody in Kalihi Valley Homes. Kanakaole has more than 60 children and 17 adults in her classes. Some of them performed recently at the Kalihi Valley Housing Children’s Day ceremonies.

The teahouse still is a popular dining place among island residents. One of the most beautiful is Nuuanu Onsen, which comes closest to capturing the atmosphere of a teahouse in Japan. But local teahouses face a precarious future. Two of the older ones recently have been razed to make way for condominiums and townhouses.
