Evelyn Waugh once wrote that “people who write to the newspapers are proverbially unbalanced.” When it comes to writing about highway speed limits, count me in.
Of all the letters published by your newspaper to date, little mention has been made of a car’s cruise control. This issue was addressed in the 1980s by The Washington Post, in commenting on a letter it received from John Nestor, a federal civil servant. Nestor said that on every highway he immediately moved to the far left lane and set his cruise control to the stated speed limit. The Post noted that henceforth the newspaper should refer to this condition as “Nestoring,” in deference to Nestor.
Nestor’s “Nestoring” produced a stream of comments, few of which were laudatory.
