The comments by United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz and Hawaii Republican Party Chairwoman Shirlene DelaCruz Santiago Ostrov on the deplorable state of our international airport seem to say it all (“Why the Inouye International Airport remains in disrepair,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, June 10).
After enjoying Japan’s beautiful airports year after year, and South Korea’s for the first time this year, my wife and I always wonder why our international visitors can’t enjoy the same experience, or even find a rest-room, upon their arrival.
Then it hit me: For many, it’s the first and only time they will visit paradise, and our leaders want them to experience the lush, tropical, “old-world” airport feel with no restrooms, no air conditioning, long luggage-toting walks over luggage-unfriendly carpet and nothing modern to distract from that feel.
Of course, what was I thinking?
