Manu O Ke Kai was the first to cross the finish line in the Women's Novice A race. They celebrated when they got to shore (l-r) Joy Kiyan hugging Lili Taliulu, Nancy Amantiod hugging Jackie Reed and Lisa Odland. They later found out that they were disqualified. During the race as they were heading home to finish, their canoe got pushed far to the left by a strong current and their steerswoman, Lisa Odland couldn't correct quickly as she was unable to see the finish flag. They corrected their course and still finished first, but after crossing the finish line, they went out of bounds to the left (where there were no other canoes) and then re-entered the course. Unfortunately, the rules state you must not re-enter, even after finishing so they were disqualified.
