Thousands gather to remember and celebrate those who have passed

Thousands turned at Ala Moana for the annual Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii event that honors deceased loved ones. Held on Memorial Day, participants write messages on lanterns that are floated into the ocean.

Thousands of lanterns were set afloat as seen against the Kakaako skyline during Monday’s lantern ceremony at Ala Moana Beach Park. Approximately 50,000 people gathered to light lanterns in remembrance of loved ones or simply view the event.
